Ronnie & Heather Skene have been missionaries in France since 1984. After a year of language study in Albertville, Savoy, they began working at L'Eau Vive Provence, a Christian centre near Aix-en-Provence. In 1988 they moved to work full-time with the small assembly at Istres (between Marseilles and Arles). It was a real joy for them to see this local church growing, and in 1998, Ronnie & Heather felt that it was time to leave the assembly in French hands & to move on to a more needy area. The Lord led them to Gramat in The Lot, to a small assembly in this area of S.W. France where there is very little Christian witness. They quickly settled into this rural culture, so different from that of Provence to which they had grown accustomed, and soon understood why it is often referred to as 'La Vieille France' (Old France). Here people are much less 'stressed up' than in the extreme South and have a very different approach to life! Ronnie's ministry in the local church includes teaching, preaching, evangelism and pastoral care. Heather is very much involved in ladies' Bible studies, teaching Sunday School and personal evangelism. Together, they host a young people's evening in their home once every 6 weeks, and are delighted to welcome these young folk, some of whom travel a long distance just to be together with others of their own age. Evangelism in France is very much a matter of making contacts with people, going out to where they are and gaining their friendship and confidence, before trying to present to them the gospel message of hope and assurance, only available in Jesus-Christ. On moving to The Lot, Heather decided to try and use her gift for painting as a means of evangelism, by putting texts from the Bible on certain of her paintings. The first such effort concerned a painting of Two Apostles, looking steadfastly up into the sky at the time of the ascension of Jesus. The text from Actschapter 1 verse 11 has been read by thousands of people in several art exhibitions and has often provoked discussions. She now has quite a collection of such paintings and at each exhibition, they 'speak' to those who stop to look. Here are some examples of Heather's work. You
